The Al-Cantàra Winery

Since 2005, a project where art, poetry and winemaking tradition become one.

History of the Winery · since 2005

Where it all began

Al-Cantàra is a wine estate founded in 2005 with the aim of expressing the excellence of Etna's wines through a unique combination of art, poetry and tradition.

The estate that hosts the project bore the marks of the difficulties of the early twentieth century: phylloxera, the shrinking of the vineyards and conversion to other crops. Of the roughly 20 hectares, only 4 were planted with vines; the rest had been converted to hazelnut and olive groves. Those bush-trained Nerello Mascalese vineyards were converted to trellis training; 2,000 stocks of the old vineyard preserve their ungrafted, own roots.

The Vineyards

Estate-grown grapes only

The winery rises on the slopes of Etna, in an area historically devoted to viticulture.

Al-Cantàra produces Etna DOC and Terre Siciliane IGP wines using exclusively grapes harvested from its own vineyards: Nerello Mascalese, Nerello Cappuccio and Carricante, alongside international varieties such as Pinot Nero and Cabernet Sauvignon.

The founder's words

This estate, after my family and my daughters, is the thing into which I have poured the most love and passion. It is without doubt the most beautiful thing I have done in my life.

Labels like works of art

For Al-Cantàra a good wine is not merely a drink, but a form of poetry to be savoured.

The labels are decorated with works by young Sicilian artists, such as Annachiara Di Pietro, while the names of the wines draw inspiration from poems by illustrious Sicilian authors — Nino Martoglio, Luigi Pirandello, Giovanni Verga — making every bottle a tale that celebrates the culture of the island.

The Little Museum

Four hundred works in an 1850 farmhouse

A distinctive feature of the winery is its "Little Museum", housed in an ancient farmhouse from 1850. It holds around 400 works of art — labels, bottles, corks and sculptures — created by some 300 Italian artists, including well-known names such as Oliviero Toscani and Ferdinando Scianna. Each year the winery organises artistic events that turn the visit into a cultural experience.
